Assuming no patches are reverted before release, PostgreSQL 15 will feature significant improvements to pg_basebackup and the server-side BASE_BACKUP command which implements it, including server-side compression and backup targets. In this presentation, I'll talk about the work I and others have done to improve the state of pg_basebackup for PostgreSQL 15, and give an overview of possibilities for the future. In particular, I'll give my opinion on the prospects for parallel and incremental backup: how likely is it that we will get such features, and what will they look like if we do?
